as you learn from experience

When people are not especially comfortable with their managers or perhaps have not known them long, they hesitate to move ahead unless they are fairly certain their managers would grant them approval. You hear their concern in phrases such as, "My boss would have my head." In situations like this, try making an Offer: "If you like, I could prepare a cost-justification for her. I think she'll agree pretty quickly our product will improve your bottom line."
DESIRE TO IMPRESS
All of us like to see our ideas or actions endorsed by our bosses. The person who remarks, "This ties in to something the boss said last week," will benefit from the Benchmarks: "We've found a number of executives who endorse the theory behind this practice."
Of course, it's not just verbal signals you have to listen for. You need to watch as well. watch for signs that you're moving in the wrong direction. Be prepared to switch vehicles or directions quickly. Again, we encourage adding to this list, as you learn from experience.
